1 day ago 20-16 - Daddy’s home! Seager comes through in another comeback win for Texas
Photo by Jay Biggerstaff/Getty Images A Coliseum classic The Texas Rangers scored four runs while the Oakland Athletics scored two runs. Tonight’s game felt almost nostalgic in how much it was just an endless parade of being kicked in the beans at Oakland Coliseum until Corey Seager finally broke through to rescue us from the foul mood that going 20 consecutive innings without scoring a run against the 2024 Oakland A’s had put everyone in. One day soon the Rangers will never return to the Coliseum and that will be a day to rejoice, though I would be lying if I said it won’t leave me a little wistful that such a tradition of madness will be lost. It may have been yet another struggle, but the Rangers won a second consecutive game where they trailed by multiple runs heading into the eighth. By doing so, they are now back in first place in the American League West. Player of the Game: He’s back. Corey Seager puts the @Rangers on the board and gives them the lead! pic.twitter.com/EDFjG5vKjG— MLB (@MLB) May 7, 2024 Up Next: The Rangers will next have someone who has yet to be named pitching for them against RHP Ross Stripling for Oakland. The Tuesday afternoon first pitch from Oakland Coliseum is scheduled for 2:37 pm CT and you can catch it on BS Southwest.

Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Dallas Mavericks fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys. Please take our survey The role player question is really interesting to me. Dallas has played SO WELL with Maxi Kleber and he’s no longer an option. And since Tim Hardaway is back healthy, one has to wonder if Jason Kidd will be tempted to play him or not. The answer to that question may decide the series. The defensive matchup questions are nerdy basketball stuff but the kind of questions that are key for how the early parts of this series will go. As for the series projection: Dallas in 5, let’s go!

1 day ago Anonymous college coach implies Cowboys drafted Tyler Guyton only because of length and athleticism
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images One anonymous college coach believes the Cowboys drafted Tyler Guyton based solely on his arm length and athleticism. It has been a minute now since the Dallas Cowboys drafted Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton with their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, after trading down with the Detroit Lions of course. In the moment it felt like most Cowboys fans were on board with the move given the need at tackle, both in the present and future. Guyton offers an answer for a decade in an ideal world, much like his predecessor, Tyron Smith. It is possible that you have an issue with the way that Dallas has approached some part of their team this offseason. That is fine and understandable. Everybody has opinions and all of that jazz. But the Guyton pick (at least the spirit of it) seemed to be something that just about everyone agreed was in the best interest of where the Cowboys have found/put themselves this offseason, and therefore had almost a universal sense of approval from the fanbase. One person does not seem to feel that way. An anonymous college coach implied the Cowboys drafted Tyler Guyton only because of length and athleticism On Monday the folks over at ESPN released a collection of thoughts related to the NFL draft through the lens of coaches across every power five conference. Insights from those people clearly are interesting. This year’s draft featured a run on offensive linemen in the first round which exacerbated the Cowboys’ need to get a piece of it in Guyton. Dallas had a few more options when they were initially on the clock at 24 overall but traded back with the Lions and came away with pick number 73 as a result. Given that the selection in question became interior lineman Cooper Beebe made everything look great in hindsight. But as things relate to Guyton, the anonymous voice does not seem to feel like he is much of a player and may be more of an athlete. The implication seems to be that Dallas drafted Guyton based on length and athleticism, not necessarily production playing the game of football. “Whether they’re going to bust or not, you have to have the physical tools to be an elite tackle,” he said. “The Joe Alts, the Lathams, the [Olu] Fashanus, they’ve got them. Will they pan out or not? Who knows. But you can be an edge rusher at a lot of different heights, weight, sizes, arm lengths. Same thing with quarterbacks — you can just be a winner. At tackle, if you don’t have those [physical traits] that are rare, it’s hard.” Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton, at 6-8 and 322 pounds, certainly fits the description and capped the run of first-round offensive linemen, going No. 29 to the Dallas Cowboys. “He never played at TCU, he was not an every-down player at Oklahoma last year, and he’s drafted in the first round,” a Big 12 coach said. “That’s because he’s long. It really is crazy. People think if you’re long and athletic, they can coach the rest.” To be fair to the anonymous voice here the implication seems to be said in a not-necessarily-rude way. Traits like length and athleticism are hardly common things and therefore justify taking a player in the first round. Thinking that “the rest” can be coached up is hardly a massive assumption, but even if it is, the Cowboys absolutely have the benefit of the doubt in this arena. Again, we can be upset about certain things that the Cowboys have done or continue to do, but when it comes to offensive linemen taken in the first round they simply do not miss. Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin and Tyler Smith have all proven to be wonderful players for the team so a belief in the well providing the same relief that it has in the past is justified. Jerry Jones noted in the team’s pre-draft press conference that Mike McCarthy also has a history of developing later-drafted linemen in his overall tenure in the NFL which is obviously true. McCarthy’s days with the Green Bay Packers speak for themselves and haunt us in our deepest nightmares, unfortunately. But we have seen that trend ripple into the Cowboys as well. Terence Steele was an undrafted free agent who has thrived completely in the McCarthy era so much so that he was rewarded with an extension last year. Now obviously 2023 was not his best season, but getting that much runway out of a UDFA is the point that McCarthy and his staff also know what they are doing here. Hopefully everyone involved can help Tyler Guyton be the next great name in this overall discussion.

1 day ago Black Swan Is the Latest Opening for the Make East Dallas Cool Again Club
Gabe Sanchez (l) and Ryan Payne (r) of Saint Valentine and soon the reopened Black Swan. | Kathy Tran Gabe Sanchez and Ryan Payne said yes to the address Ross Avenue, what is up? The location of the former Fiction Coffee, which packed up all its locations and left town entirely, will reboot into Black Swan imminently. And that’s great news because Gabe Sanchez’s beloved Deep Ellum bar not making it through COVID was one of Big D’s major bummers for cocktail nerds. But what has caught our eye are the other partners — obviously, Sanchez’s partner in Saint Valentine, the excellent East Dallas bar they opened at the end of 2023, is involved. But so are Brian Rutt of Alice and Columbian Country Club and Pasha Heidari, who recently reopened Saint Martin’s Wine Bistro in a new location in East Dallas with his brother and also has the top-notch and completely wildly different cocktail bars Bowen House and Mike’s Gemini Twin Lounge as well as Las Palmas Tex-Mex. Getting a five-way call together first thing in the morning wasn’t happening, so we put the question to Sanchez. “It’s the best of both worlds. It’s close to everything — two golf clubs away from downtown, relatively close to Greenville. You can go to Henderson or Uptown and come here in the same night and it’s not a big deal. There’s cool shit in Oak Cliff and we want to do cool shit here too,” he says, noting that with a lot of people moving to the East side, along with more great restaurants opening up, it feels like there is an opportunity to be had. “If you go from where the freeway breaks out of Downtown to where Ross Avenue is, a lot of cool stuff is happening and we want to be part of it.” The plan was hatched over the holidays (yes, Saint Valentine did open on Thanksgiving week, and these dudes were already having a conversation about a second bar that quickly) when Rutt asked Sanchez how he felt about reopening Black Swan. It’s nostalgic for both men, and Sanchez notes that Rutt had his first date with his now-wife at the OG Black Swan — and adds that he’s got a high batting average on fixing people up, so for all the folks trolling in the Dallas subreddits hoping to find out where to meet someone in person, go to one of Sanchez’s bars. Sanchez tells Eater Dallas to expect a dark, small vibe and the return of the Clint Eastwood velvet painting from the original location and some other music-based art he’s borrowing back from friends. “If Saint Valentine is the Black Keys, Black Swan will be more like Freddy King and Albert King. More blues, more dark.” He says to expect a big city bar vibe in a tight space, like those in San Francisco and Chicago, where you’ll be close to the drinker next to you. The footprint will be very similar to the original location as well. The biggest difference might be that this time around, Black Swan will have a menu. He promises fun cocktails, nerdy but approachable cocktails, infused liquors, a section of rotating classic favorites, and that he and Payne will be behind the bar at least once a week. The press release did not share an opening date, but Sanchez says they’re “almost there” and “super, super close,” making it sound like it’s mere days and a shipment of black staff t-shirts away.

1 day ago Langford to i.l., Ornelas recalled
Photo by David Durochik/Diamond Images via Getty Images The Rangers have recalled Jonathan Ornelas to take Wyatt Langford’s spot on the active roster The Texas Rangers have placed outfielder Wyatt Langford on the 10 day injured list with a strained hamstring, the team announced today. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled infielder Jonathan Ornelas from AAA Round Rock. Bruce Bochy said yesterday that Langford would be out 3-4 weeks, so the question was simply who was going to be called up to take Langford’s spot on the active roster today. There were only three position players who were 1) in the minors, and 2) on the 40 man roster — Ornelas, Sam Huff and Dustin Harris. And while it was possible that the Rangers would make a 40 man roster move to add someone like Sandro Fabian or Derek Hill, the most likely scenario was bringing up someone already on the 40 man. Ornelas spent a brief amount of time in the majors last year, in a similar situation where a warm body for the bench was needed. With Ezequiel Duran presumably getting regular DH at bats in Langford’s absence and Davis Wendzel already up, Ornelas would seem likely to be mostly used in late game blowouts or as a pinch runner. Ornelas can play all the infield positions, and has also played some center field in the minors. In 614 career plate appearances at AAA, he has a .258/.361/.366 slash line, and is 16 for 18 on stolen base attempts.
