12 hours ago Thoughts on a 15-8 Rangers win
Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images Rangers 15, A’s 8 Rangers 15, A’s 8 Hey, the offense woke up! The things about pouring on a bunch of runs early on, though, is that then the team stops scoring a bunch of runs, in which case you’re like, aw, dang, they stopped scoring runs, or else the team keeps scoring a bunch of runs, in which case you’re like, hey, we don’t need all these extra runs, why don’t you save them for tomorrow, or, like, I don’t know, give some to charity. I will note that, if you’re going to score ten runs in the second inning, doing it with Jose Urena on the mound is pretty good timing. When Spinal Tap said, the bigger the cushion, the better the pushin’, or so I have read, the big bottom that they were singing about was probably Jose Urena’s. Actually, I don’t know that that’s true. I’m not even really sure how big Jose Urena’s posterior is, or if his gluteus is especially maximus. But what I do know is that when you have your long reliever on the mound making a spot start, you want to gluteus maximize the number of runs you score, because you never feel like you are all that far away from it being uncomfortably close, even if you’ve put up double digits and your opponents play in a poop stadium and have a payroll less than Corey Seager’s tax bill. Urena wasn’t a problem today, really. In fact, despite a laborious first couple of innings that led one to wonder if he’d make it into the fourth inning, Urena ended up going five full innings. He only allowed two runs, just one of them earned. So good on him. And hopefully we won’t need to call on Urena to start again in 2024, something that was necessitated by a combination of a regularly scheduled doubleheader being played tomorrow and a full rotation’s worth of starting pitchers being on the injured list. A combination of Jonathan Hernandez, Yerry Rodriguez and Cole Winn pitched the final four innings. Let us not speak of the Hernandez outing. Let us instead bury it at a crossroads under a full moon, and then put an iron rod and maybe some holy water over it. I suspect the message to Yerry was “eat (innings), drink (innings, I guess?) and be merry, for tomorrow you may fly to Round Rock so a fresh arm can be brought up for the doubleheader.” Cole Winn pitched an uneventful scoreless inning, and it is remarkable how unremarkable that has become all of the sudden. It’s like, oh, yeah, Cole Winn is in the game, he will throw a scoreless inning and strike someone out and we just expect that now, ho hum. As a baseball fan, one of the things I think we can all appreciate is a reliably boring reliever. The Rangers scored 15 runs on 19 hits in the game. That is, I think you will agree, a lot. It’s one of those performances where it may be simpler to wave in the general direction of the position players and say “these guys did good” rather than try to single out individual performances. But it is worth mentioning, I think, that Jonah Heim, Leody Taveras and Marcus Semien went a combined 11 for 14 from the 8-9-1 spots. I was going to say the 8-9-1 spots went 11 for 14 but Jonathan Ornelas and Andrew Knizner replaced Semien and Heim, respectively, and went had a hitless at bat, and that made me have to re-word. Or else say 11 for 16, but that doesn’t have the same verve, the same brio, the same je ne sais quoi as 11 for 14. Marcus Semien hit a home run to lead off the game, and then the Rangers scored 14 more runs without a homer, which is kind of funny to me. Corey Seager was 2 for 4 before being lifted in the bottom of the fourth with the Rangers up 15-2, which may be some sort of record for earliest “pull the veteran to get him the rest of the game off because you’re up by so much” move I’ve ever seen. Again, doubleheader tomorrow, got to keep dem legs fresh. Jose Urena topped out at 97.9 mph with his fastball. Jonathan Hernandez reached 98.2 mph with his sinker. Yerry Rodriguez hit 98.5 mph with his fastball. Cole Winn maxed out at 97.1 mph. Marcus Semien had a 107.1 mph double and a 107.0 mph home run. Leody Taveras had a 105.8 mph single. Jonah Heim had a 103.1 mph single and a 101.6 mph single. Josh Smith had a 100.7 mph double. Two tomorrow, then off day.

14 hours ago Mavericks vs Thunder Game 1 Preview and Game Thread: Dallas visits Oklahoma City to kick off round 2
Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images A Red River series of sorts The Dallas Mavericks head north to face the Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday night, kicking off their round two series of the NBA Playoffs. Dallas polished off the Los Angeles Clippers a few days ago, winning that series 4-2. The Thunder, meanwhile, have had over a week to gameplan and consider their upcoming opponent after throttling the New Orleans Pelicans in a 4-0 sweep. Let’s get to the key things: WHO: Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder WHAT: Playoffs? Are you kidding me?! WHERE: Paycom Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma WHEN: 8:30 p.m. CST HOW: TNT or Max (formerly HBO Max) The Mavericks have the injury report you’d expect. Maxi Kleber is out with his shoulder injury suffered in game six against the Clippers. Olivier Maxence Prosper is also out still with his ankle injury. Luka Doncic is on the injury report now with his sprained knee, but he’s listed as probable. The Thunder don’t have any injuries listed on the report. We’ve had some preview work on this series. After the game one preview and betting post, there’s this longer look at positional matchups that’s a pretty great primer on the series. There’s also this really good argument on Dereck Lively being the key to the series. Josh and I did a recording last night on what we expect from the series as well I don’t know if the Mavericks are going to win this series. But I’d REALLY like them to win game one. They are 0-4 in game ones during head coach Jason Kidd’s tenure. They’ve also won most of the series they’ve played! Which is impressive! I just want them to win game one though, surprise me, change the series. We’ll be back after the game with the usual stuff. Thanks so much for hanging out. Go Mavs!

15 hours ago 21-16 - Rangers clobber A’s 15-8 for season-best 4th consecutive victory
Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports A ten spot second inning helps Rangers cruise The Texas Rangers scored 15 runs while the Oakland Athletics scored eight runs. No comeback required for the Rangers today. In fact, Texas was up 1-0 after the first pitch of this one as Marcus Semien began a big day from the bats with a leadoff dong. By the end of the second inning, it was 11-0 as the Rangers scored a near-season’s worth of runs in the second frame. By the end of the fourth inning, the Rangers had scored the 15 runs that they finished with. The only bummer is they weren’t able to top their season-best total after also scoring 15 against the Royals in Kansas City last Saturday. The Rangers got their runs today in a similar fashion as that win in KC as they just relentlessly found holes for run-producing singles while only mustering four extra base hits — the home run and a double by Semien and a double each for Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Smith — during their 19-hit barrage. Semien and Jonah Heim both had four hits apiece while Leody Taveras had three hits and reached four times on the day. Scoring so many runs early and often proved a boon for Texas in what was a bullpen day by design with Nathan Eovaldi’s turn in the rotation coming today ahead of a doubleheader tomorrow. Jose Urena filled in for the ailing Eovaldi and made himself a winner by going five innings and allowing just one earned run in his spot start. That Urena was able to gamely give Texas five innings on 90 pitches out of the ‘pen sets them up nicely for the rest of the series and the rest of the road trip. Player of the Game: You can’t go wrong with a lot of Rangers players today but when the sport’s main account is tweeting about your day, it’s probably you: Marcus Semien had himself a day at the plate. pic.twitter.com/v2gNMn8jjz— MLB (@MLB) May 7, 2024 Up Next: The Rangers have a scheduled doubleheader on the docket tomorrow with RHP Michael Lorenzen set to pitch in the opener for Texas against LHP J.P. Sears for Oakland. In the nightcap finale, RHP Jack Leiter is back with the big league club, while the A’s will turn to RHP Osvaldo Bido. Wednesday’s finale double dip will being with a Game 1 first pitch of 2:37 pm CT with Game 2 to follow roughly 90 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest. Both games will be available via BS Southwest.

16 hours ago Cowboys reportedly chose between Marist Liufau, MarShawn Lloyd, Jaylen Wright in 3rd round
Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image Of Sport/Getty Images The Cowboys appear to have chosen Marist Liufau over two specific running backs. The pick was always going to be a reach. Given that the Dallas Cowboys did not have a fourth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft we all knew that whoever they chose in the third round (number 87 overall) was going to be a unique choice in that it had to be someone they absolutely needed to have. The first Cowboys pick on Sunday did not come until the fifth round (number 174 overall) which made 87 unique as noted. For the most part we saw the Cowboys prioritize value during each selection throughout the draft, but that went out the window a bit at 87 with the team not returning to the clock for coincidentally 87 more selections. The Cowboys drafted linebacker Marist Liufau out of Notre Dame and doing so cost them the opportunity at other players. Two of those other players have now been named (sort of) and they fit the position that many people wanted to see addressed throughout the draft - running back. It appears things ultimately came down to Marist Liufau, MarShawn Lloyd or Jaylen Wright for the Cowboys at 87 overall The Cowboys did not draft a running back at all on draft weekend, but they did bring back Ezekiel Elliott first thing on the Monday morning following it. Elliott’s return feels a little bit like a Cowboys Thing, but the merits of it are valid in a vacuum. Zeke can certainly contribute to a team in 2024 and presuming the Cowboys do not put too much on his plate then the jokes and snickering about it all will all be for not. I recently discussed this overall idea with Kay Adams on her show Up & Adams on Monday if you would like to watch. But back to the draft, it was the worst-kept secret in the world that Dallas was going to bring Zeke back at some point, and to say that this did not impact the way they approached their process would be naïve. In some small way, it is possible that the pending Zeke return allowed the Cowboys to prioritize Marist Liufau at number 87 overall and say no thanks to certain running backs like MarShawn Lloyd and Jaylen Wright who went to the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins, respectively. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler those were two players who Dallas was considering at 87. The Cowboys were working the fringes on running back, one of several needs, but the lack of a fourth-round pick hurt their chances. The No. 87 pick was a spot where they could have chosen a back, but the Cowboys felt Notre Dame linebacker Marist Liufau not only addressed another major need but provided the toughness to fit within Mike Zimmer’s defense. Dallas had shown enough pre-draft love to MarShawn Lloyd that the USC tailback (who went to Green Bay at No. 88) thought the Cowboys would be one of the possible teams to draft him. The Cowboys also really liked Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright, who went No. 120 overall (the 20th pick of the fourth round) to Miami. If the Cowboys had a fourth-rounder and Wright were still available, chances are they would have jumped on him. Prior to the draft there was all sorts of chatter about Dallas being interested in University of Texas running back Jonathan Brooks who ultimately went to the Carolina Panthers. It is possible that this was true and it is also possible that this was some sort of smokescreen, but Brooks was never making it to the Cowboys as he went 46 overall, before Dallas even took Marshawn Kneeland 10 picks later. Dallas’ fourth-round pick belonged to the San Francisco 49ers by way of the Trey Lance trade from last August and it was 129 overall. Here are the running backs that went from 88 all the way through 173 right before Dallas returned to the clock: 88 overall: MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay Packers 120 overall: Jaylen Wright, Miami Dolphins 124 overall, the pick that Dallas sent to San Francisco 125 overall: Bucky Irving, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 127 overall: Will Shipley, Philadelphia Eagles 128 overall: Ray Davis, Buffalo Bills 129 overall: Isaac Guerendo, San Francisco 49ers 134 overall: Braelon Allen, New York Jets 147 overall: Audric Estime, Denver Broncos 165 overall: Rasheen Ali, Baltimore Ravens 166 overall: Tyrone Tracy, New York Giants 167 overall: Keilan Robinson, Jacksonville Jaguars 173 overall: Isaiah Davis, New York Jets As you can see the Cowboys would have been fine in terms of ability to draft a running back had they held their original fourth-round pick. If they wanted one then it is clear that they would have had to have spent that 87th overall selection and clearly felt that Marist Liufau (with the knowledge once again of Zeke returning) was the better overall play. Sometimes that is just the way that it goes.
